Web Services FAQs
  • Does DPH-IT develop web sites and/or web applications?

Yes, web site design and development services for the Division is available by request. Please call 919-707-5160. An NCPHIN team member will discuss your request and explain the process (such as whether or not Public Affairs approval is required).

  • Will DPH-IT develop, maintain, or review the content (copy) for our web site?

DPH-IT can not be responsible for creating or reviewing web site content for sites. The section, branch, or unit that owns the web site should develop and maintain the content. Most web site content and revisions must be reviewed and approved by the DHHS Office of Public Affairs before posting to the "live"/public web sites.

  • Can DPH-IT host our web site?

DPH-IT has hosting capabilities and can arrange hosting services. Please contact NCPHIN at 919-707-5160 to begin the process of requesting hosting.

  • How can we obtain or renew the domain (URL) for our web site?

You obtain a domain (URL) by purchasing rights to the domain (if the domain is available) through a registrar for a certain length of time (at least one year). Registration costs vary according to the registrar and duration (in years). Typically, costs do not exceed $35 for a one-year registration. You can check availability of a domain by conducting an online search through a registrar. DPH-IT presently uses Network Solutions http://www.networksolutions.com (link opens in new window) for processing most domain registration requests. DPH-IT can assist with procurement of the domain by request.

  • We have an existing web site that needs to be updated but no one to do the maintenance - will DPH-IT make the changes for us?

DPH-IT Web Services provides maintenance services by request as resources permit. Please call 919-707-5160, and a team member will discuss your request.

  • What technologies can I utilize on a web site hosted by DPH-IT?

Web Services supports a variety of web technologies. However, specifics of this issue are probably best addressed at the time you make your request.

Security FAQs
  • Where can I find official information about computer security policies for state government employees?

Information security documentation for state employees is available through the following web sites:

NOTE: For DPH Computer Security Basic Awareness Training, DPH Basic Privacy Awareness Training, and the DHHS Acceptable Computer Use policy, please visit the Security & Privacy Training page.

  • What should I do if I suspect the security of my computer has been compromised?

Please contact your LAN Support Team immediately.

  • How can I protect my computer from viruses, worms, and other malicious software (malware)?

If you work onsite, your LAN Support Team should have network security measures in place to protect your computer. If you work remotely, you may be more vulnerable if you have not consulted with your LAN Support Team to secure your system. If you are uncertain you have adequate security in place, please contact your LAN Support Team. In addition, the Enterprise Security and Risk Management Office (link opens in new window) has some antivirus and malware tools available.

  • What is Spyware?

Please refer to the WebRoot Spyware Information Center (link opens in new window) for detailed information about Spyware, including steps to prevent, detect, and remove Spyware.

  • I have very little knowledge of security issues. Where can I learn more about security?

Please consult with your LAN Support Team and refer to the following resources:

US-CERT (United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team)

Additional Web Sites

  • I received a piece of SPAM with an attachment -- should I open the attachment?

It is strongly advised you DO NOT open the attachment. The attachment may contain a virus, or some other malware that could compromise the security of your system and/or the network. If you suspect you have received a piece of email that could harm systems operations, as opposed to a regular harmless (though annoying) piece of SPAM, please contact your LAN Support Team. DO NOT forward the attachment until asked to do so. If you have received a piece of SPAM you are quite sure is harmless and want to report the offending piece of email, please refer to the following question.

  • Where/how do I report SPAM?

Create a new email with a subject line of SPAM, include both the message header and body of the offending piece of SPAM, then send the email you have created to spam@ncmail.net. (Note: After adding the message header and body of the offending piece of email, you do not need to type any additional text into the body of the email.)

The procedures for copying message headers vary depending on your email client. Please refer to the "Help" section of your email client for information on how to copy message headers. For example, if you are using Microsoft Outlook 2002-2003:

  1. To view headers in Outlook, you must open a message first.
  2. On the View menu, click Options. Note: If you do not see the Options command, make sure you click View on the toolbar in an open message window. The View menu on the standard Outlook toolbar does not have the Options command.
  3. Header information appears in the Internet headers box. Select and copy all header text and paste it into the body of the new email, then select and copy all of the text in the body of the piece of SPAM and paste it into the body of the new email.
  • Where can I find documentation on HIPAA compliance?

HIPAA information is available at the following web site: http://www.schs.state.nc.us/hipaa/ (link opens in new window).

  • What can I do to protect myself from ID theft?

Learn more at www.noscamnc.gov (link opens in new window), an ID theft prevention, mitigation, and recovery resource from the North Carolina Department of Justice.
